Léran is a busy farming village in a traditional and unspoilt part of rural southwest France. With a population of about 600, it has a Château and a boulangerie, restaurant, post office, Mairie, primary school and a lively bar, which serves excellent food. There is a village tennis court (to which we have a key) and a football pitch. On Friday evenings in July and August the centre of the village is sealed off, stall-holders set up, and several hundred people pitch up for the Marché Gourmand, eating at trestle tables set up by the Mairie. There is often a band, and the evening turns into a massive party. |

The Lac de Montbel, a huge inland lake, is 2 Km away with horse-riding, sailing, boating, windsurfing and safe swimming. Léran has spectacular views of the Pyrenees and is a ten-minute drive from the beautiful medieval town of Mirepoix, with its famous arcades, cathedral, market (Mondays), shops, cafés, restaurants and swimming pool. There is also excellent swimming in the lake next to the Cathar Castle of Puivert, (20 mins by car), where many families take children (see area).
